The impetus for this stems from an innate curiosity about an unknown world that existed eons before my time, and thus, it’s a common habit of mine to delve into hours of research after becoming fixated on the beginnings of a certain of period, place or event. Such was case with playgrounds after I started reflecting on the differences in the playgrounds I grew up with during the 70’s verses those of today. Where did they come from? How did they evolve, and why were the ones from my childhood built on asphalt?

The playground concept, as it turns out, originated in Germany in the 1800’s as a dedicated instructional area meant for teaching kids how to play “properly.” The concept officially didn’t take hold in America, though, until 1903 when New York City opened the country’s first municipal playground at Seward Park. Prior to this children, particularly those in urban areas, were left with streets, sidewalks, or worse to choose from, making it readily apparent that kids needed a lace of their own. With this in mind, plans for New York’s Central Park in the 1850’s included a small climbing hill called “Kinderberg.” However, access to Kinderberg was limited and, as a sign of the times, only boys were allowed to use it—hardly a viable option.

                                         Seward Park in NYC

With the explosive growth of immigration at the turn of the century, the need for playgrounds became dire as more and more kids died from accidents that occurred while playing in unsafe environments. In the reform spirit of the Progressive Era (1870-1920), the issue of playgrounds was championed by the Mothers’ and Children’s Movement, whose efforts forced the creation a number of state and local provisions meant to aid the building of playgrounds. This, in turn, led to a boom in the number of playgrounds, further spurred on by the National Playground Association, whose mission included conducting studies, developing educational curriculums and publishing periodicals all dedicated to playground advocacy.

As cities witnessed the resulting declines in truancy and juvenile delinquency, they became eager proponents, appropriating an increasing amount of resources towards playground development and use. This exuberance, at times, made for some incredible stories.

In 1909 Washington, DC transformed an abandoned cemetery into a full-scale playground sectioned off by age group and gender. (The article I read never mentioned what happened to the cemetery’s inhabitants, but the before and after pictures are quite remarkable.) After establishing an official “Play Day” in 1916,Johnston, PA put on a playground picnic attended by 12,000 people, 4,000 of whom were children they city bussed in and fed. The festivities concluded at dusk following the play, Mother Goose in Fairyland as performed by a small cast of children totaling 500. (That would make a crowd auditioning for American Idol look like a Rotary Club Meeting.) My favorite story, though, comes from Grand Rapids, MI, where in 1906, a judge sentences several boys who were caught playing on the… (see where)

Occupy Wall St & A Reaction to the Gilded Age

Occupy Wall St & A Reaction to the Gilded Age:

The frustration of Occupy Wall Street framed within the context of another similar period in American History when one NY socialite thought she’d stimulate the U.S. Economy by throwing a party for the social elite.
Halloween scares me. Not the ghosts and goblins rigmarole–I’m talking being scared as a parent with young girls. I’ve watched my two stepdaughters get dressed up and take candy from strangers going on five years now. It’s always been fun for them, of course, but as the girls have gotten older, I’ve noticed an unsettling trend when it comes to

"I acknowledge but one letter from you, since you left us, of the 14th of July which just arrived in..."

“
I acknowledge but one letter from you, since you left us, of the 14th of July which just arrived in time to appease a violent conflict between my friendship and my pride. I have written you five or six letters since you left Philadelphia and I should have written you more had you made proper return. But like a jealous lover, when I thought you slighted my caresses, my affection was alarmed and my vanity piqued. I had almost resolved to lavish no more of them upon you and to reject you as an inconstant and an ungrateful —-

But you have now disarmed my resentment and by a single mark of attention made up the quarrel. You must at least allow me a large stock of good nature.
”

-
Alexander Hamilton to John Laurens

Go to almost any social function, and you’ll generally notice two types of people: The Wallflower and The Life of the Party. Wallflowers hang out at the edge of the room making occasional chit-chat but only when forced to. The Life of the Party, though, stands near the middle of the room where his charisma draws in a crowd.

Translate this into the social media world where Facebook is the host of a global mixer, and then ask yourself which of the two above groups are you — A Wallflower or The Life of the Party? With Facebook’s revolutionary new changes, you are about to find out the answer.

How? Facebook’s modifications to page functionality, ads, and metrics are all aimed at accomplishing two things: 1) increasing the amount of follower engagement with a brand, and 2) improving the quality of content produced by the brand. Do these two things well, and your company will be surrounded by active followers who are more likely to become customers. Keep you page at the room’s edge, and your brand will go unnoticed. Here’s what you need to know.
